The F-35 Lightning is a multi-role fighter that was developed based on a plan to consolidate various tactical aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps into one type of aircraft and its derivatives, and began deployment in 2011. II. Among the three types of F-35 developed, the F-35B for the Marine Corps is capable of short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) with a rotating engine duct nozzle and lift fan. In addition, it features a weapon bay that allows weapons to be stored within the fuselage, radar wave absorption technology, etc., and combines high-speed performance with a maximum speed of Mach 1.6 and excellent stealth. Following the US, UK, and Italy, Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force also decided to introduce the F-35B in August 2019.
